Cockroaches! The only creatures that can adopt change in their environment extremely easily, no wonder, hey have survived for the last 400 million years. Having a cockroach infestation in your space is a living nightmare, as it is not only very difficult to get rid of them, but they also multiply really quickly.
These little creepy creatures not only make a disgusting eyesore, but also a health hazard, as they are capable of spreading six different forms of parasitic worms, 33 forms of bacteria, and around seven other pathogens that affect humans. Moreover, the allergens from cockroaches can trigger asthma and allergies.
SO HOW DO WE MAKE SURE OUR HOMES REMAIN ROACH FREE?
Sanitation is the key to keep such a resistant foe away. Here are some ways:
- Take out the trash
Make sure there are no garbage bags lying around, and they are properly disposed-off. Cockroaches thrive on leftover food items. Also ensure the area where the bin is kept does not have any bits of food particles.
- Wash the dishes regularly-
Leaving dirty dishes to sit out overnight is like an open invitation to cockroaches. If you are unable to clean the dishes right away, make sure to at least rinse them, or leave them soaking in some soapy water. The same rule applies to dishwashers. Rinse your dishes before loading them in and be sure that your dishwasher itself is kept clean. A good tip to try is to wipe your kitchen basin and dishwasher clean with a white vinegar rinse.
- Ventilation and holes-
Cockroaches are attracted to moisture. So if you have areas where moisture build-up can happen, find a way to ventilate these areas in order to create a drier atmosphere. In the house, look for gaps and cracks in the walls and floors and make sure to seal them.
- Store your food properly–
Any food that is stored in cabinets should be sealed in containers that are air tight. Make sure there are no open packets stored, otherwise be prepared to see an unwelcomed guest in your next bowl of cereals. Make sure the shelves where the food is being stored is also clean and well maintained.
- Keep your pets clean-
If you have pets, it’s important that you keep their food and water bowls clean. Give them a good wash every day. And don’t leave food out overnight. You may want to find a better way for leaving water out at night too because your pet’s water bowl is another attraction to cockroaches.
Additionally, you should also remove all clutter – newspapers, magazines, paper bags, boxes, etc. – since these give them more places to live and breed.
